What actually happens when you hire a solo musician for a full wedding day in Scotland

When couples start planning their wedding music, the question that comes up more than any other is not "what songs do you play?" It is: "but can one person really cover the whole day?" It is a fair question. A full wedding day is a long time, and the musical mood shifts dramatically from one part to the next.

The short answer is yes. Here is what it actually looks like when I cover a wedding day from start to finish.

The ceremony

The ceremony is where the music matters most and has to be quietest. I arrive early, set up discreetly, and we go through the running order: the walk-in song, anything during the signing of the register, and the walk-out. These songs are yours to choose. If you have got something specific in mind — a song from a holiday, the track that was playing when you got engaged, a family favourite — that is what I will learn and play. Bespoke is the default, not an upgrade.

The drinks reception

After the ceremony, the drinks reception is the acoustic set. This is where a solo musician is genuinely the right choice. The goal is ambient but live — music that fills the room, sets the mood, and gives people something to drift over to when they want to but does not demand their attention when they are catching up with family they have not seen in two years. I bring my own professional sound system, set up at an appropriate volume for the room size, and we go from there.

The evening

By evening, the tone shifts. The family formal photos are done, the meal is over, and people want to dance and have a good time. The evening set is bigger, louder, and built around getting the floor moving. I can add the Guitaraoke add-on here too — an hour where the guests become the act, choosing songs and singing along. It is one of the best things you can add to a wedding evening if you have got a crowd who want to be part of the entertainment rather than just watching it.

Why one person is enough

A five-piece band needs a green room, a bigger stage, more setup time, and a coordinated logistics operation just to get them all in the venue. I show up, set up quickly and quietly, and work around whatever the venue and the timeline need. I coordinate directly with the venue staff so you do not have to manage it on the day. The sound is professional, the set is bespoke, and nothing needs to be wrangled.

I cover weddings across Central Scotland — Stirling, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth, Aberfoyle, and everywhere in between. If you are planning a 2027 wedding and want to talk through what the music could look like, you can book a conversation or make an enquiry directly at barryhoneymanmusic.com. Dates are starting to fill, especially the peak summer months.
